Ian Christie is an independent advisor, researcher, teacher and writer on sustainable development and environmental issues. He is an Associate of the UK environmental policy think-tank Green Alliance, is the chair of the RESOLVE Advisory Committee group and has been a contributor to courses for many years at the Centre for Environmental Strategy.
Ian's work has included advisory roles on sustainability and climate policy in Whitehall (2006-2008), consultancy to voluntary bodies, public agencies and businesses, lecturing and advocacy. Ian was joint head of environment, waste strategy and economic development at Surrey County Council (2003-2006) ; his other posts have included deputy director of the think-tank Demos and associate director of the consumer trends consultancy The Henley Centre for Forecasting. He worked for nearly ten years as a fellow of the Policy Studies Institute, working on technology policy, energy efficiency and take-up of cleaner production systems in UK industry.
Ian's early career was in the IT industry as a computer programmer and technical author. His main publications are Cleaner Production in Industry (PSI, 1995), Managing Sustainable Development (with Michael Carley, 2nd edition, Earthscan, 2000), From Here to Sustainability (Earthscan, 2001) and Church and Earth (Church House, 2009), the Church of England's Seven Year Plan for Climate and Environment. His research interests include policy analysis for sustainable development, behaviour and values for sustainable consumption, social and cultural dimensions of climate policy, environmental philosophy and resource management.
